At the moment, I am working on the Stardust Collection combining my love for weaving with my fascination for the universe. Read more in the introduction of the Stardust Collection. Today, I would like to introduce you to Luminosity.
Op dit moment werk ik aan de Stardust Collectie waarin mijn liefde voor weven en mijn fascinatie voor het universum samen komen. Lees meer in de introductie van de Stardust Collectie. Vandaag stel ik jullie voor aan Luminosity.
Luminosity: the color palette of a star
Everything radiates. Not just stars, but also planets, plants, animals and people. This radiation is temperature-dependent and spans the entire color spectrum of the rainbow — from ultraviolet to infrared. Starlight is hence made up of a collection of colors. In the case of sunlight, this can be seen in a rainbow. The spectrum determines the luminosity of the star, a measure of how bright the star shines. The shawl Luminosity has a warp that gradually changes color, just as the light spectrum of a star does. While the gradient of purple, turquoise and green in Luminosity does not correspond with the light spectrum of an actual star, it is still a nice reminder that starlight always contains a complete color palette.
Alles straalt, niet alleen sterren, maar ook planeten, planten, dieren en mensen. De straling is afhankelijk van temperatuur en doorloopt het hele kleurenspectrum van ultraviolette straling naar infrarode straling. Het licht dat we zien van een ster bevat dus een schakering aan kleuren. Bij zonnestraling is dit te zien in een regenboog. Het hele spectrum aan straling bepaalt de totale lichtkracht (luminosity in het Engels) van de ster en hiermee zijn helderheid. De sjaal Luminosity heeft een schering met een prachtig geleidelijk kleurverloop, net zoals het lichtspectrum van een ster geleidelijk alle kleuren doorloopt. Hoewel de opvolging van tinten paars, turquoise en groen in Luminosity niet overeenkomt met het lichtspectrum van een echte ster, is het wel een mooie herinnering dat het licht van een ster altijd is opgebouwd uit een heel kleurpalet.

Yarn and color palette
Luminosity has a warp made of a cotton and viscose blend that gradually changes colors and has a slight shimmer. For the weft, I used a blend of cotton (45%), alpaca (47%) and wool (8%). This yarn is made by blowing alpaca and wool fibers into a cotton tube. This results in a nice thick yarn that is still lightweight, making the shawl both warm and breathable. The warp has a gradient of different shades of purple, turquoise and green, this beautiful color changing yarn is combined with a plum weft. The combination of the smooth warp with the more fluffy weft results in a shawl with a unique texture.
Luminosity heeft een schering in een mix-garen met viscose en katoen met een subtiele glans en een geleidelijk kleurverloop. De inslag is gedaan met een mix-garen met katoen (45%), alpaca (47%) and wol (8%). Dit garen is gemaakt door alpaca en wol vezels in een katoenen kous te blazen. Dit proces geeft een lekker dik garen dat niet zwaar is, wat de sjaal een warm en toch luchtig resultaat geeft. De schering verloop langzaam van kleuren in tinten paars, turquoise en groen, wat mooi combineert met de purperkleurige inslag. De combinatie van het gladde garen in de schering met het zachte garen in de inslag geeft de sjaal een unieke textuur.
Weaving technique
Luminosity is made using the advancing twill weaving technique. A standard twill pattern can be recognized by clear diagonal lines, as can be seen in jeans fabric. In an advancing twill pattern, these diagonal lines are moved back and forth, creating zigzags. By varying this back-and-forth movement, numerous beautiful patterns can be created. For Luminosity, I applied the advancing twill technique with a gradient warp and a plum colored weft.
Luminosity is geweven met de verschoven keper weeftechniek. Een standaard keperpatroon kun je herkennen aan de duidelijke diagonale lijnen. Veel spijkerstof is bijvoorbeeld geweven als standaard keper. In een verschoven keper worden deze diagonale lijnen als het ware heen en weer geschoven. Dit zorgt voor een zigzag effect. Door te variëren met dit heen-en-weer schuiven ontstaan talloze mooie patronen. In Luminosity pas ik de verschoven keper weeftechniek toe met een gradient garen in de schering en een purperkleurige inslag.

The reaction were heartwarming and I am proud to tell you that both the Luminosity shawl and the Supernova shawl have already found a new owner. De Stardust Collectie zal in de herfst beschikbaar zijn in de damesmodezaak Eighty in Emmeloord. Neem gerust contact met me op bij opmerkingen of vragen.
